Abstrak

The low level of basic mathematics skills among students is an important concern in physics education because it can affect students' understanding of physics concepts, especially in kinematics. This study aims to analyze the initial level of basic mathematics understanding among students and identify the relationship between basic mathematics skills and understanding of kinematics concepts. This research was conducted in September 2025 at Sriwijaya University. The research method used was quantitative descriptive. Subject selection was carried out using a total sampling technique, namely all 26 students in class A Indralaya. The data collection technique involved administering 10 questions covering the concepts of fractions, mixed roots, derivatives, integrals, trigonometry, and graphing functions. The results showed that students with low mathematical abilities would have difficulty solving physics problems involving fractions, integrals, derivatives, trigonometry, and the interpretation of graph functions. Thus, it is necessary to emphasize the need for a learning model that integrates the strengthening of basic mathematical concepts as part of the learning process so that students do not just memorize formulas.
